SIMON Sudurpaschim Organizes Scientific Session...

Dhangadhi (Aswin 2): The deemed Sudurpaschim Chapter of the Society of Internal Medicine of Nepal (SIMON) organized a scientific session titled “Beyond Glycemic Control: A Dual Approach to Cardiorenal Protection” at Hotel Pauwa on 18th Sep 2026 with participation from around 35–40 healthcare professionals, including physicians, surgeons, medical officers and other medical practitioners.

The scientific program focused on the changing approach to diabetes management, emphasizing that effective diabetes care extends beyond achieving glycemic targets to reducing cardiovascular, renal and metabolic complications.

Dr. Amod Nepal, Consultant Physician, delivered the scientific presentation, highlighting contemporary evidence on cardiorenal protection in patients with diabetes. The program also featured an interactive panel discussion on GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RA), focusing on their expanding role in modern diabetes management and their potential benefits beyond glucose lowering.

The panel discussion provided an opportunity for participants to discuss practical aspects of GLP-1 RA use, including patient selection, weight management, cardiovascular risk reduction and integration of newer therapies into routine clinical practice. Participants actively engaged with the speakers and exchanged views based on their experiences in clinical practice.

The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Shubhesh Raj Kayastha, Senior Consultant Physician; Dr. Sher Bahadur Kamar, Chief Consultant Physician; and Prof. Dr. Chiran Jibi Pant, Senior Consultant Physician. The event was anchored and facilitated by Dr. Chet Raj Bhatta, Senior Consultant Physician.

A moment was also observed during the program to pay tribute to the late Prof Dr. Madhur Dev Bhattarai, a respected Professor of Internal Medicine at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Bir Hospital. The participants expressed their condolences and remembered his contribution to internal medicine and medical education in Nepal. A condolence tribute was offered in his memory, with participants observing a moment of respect for the departed physician and teacher.

The combination of the scientific session and condolence program provided an opportunity for the medical community to come together both for academic exchange and to remember a respected member of the medical fraternity.

The event was organized by the deemed SIMON Sudurpaschim Chapter and supported by Quest Pharmaceuticals.

The program concluded with an interactive exchange among the faculty and participants. The organizers highlighted the importance of continuing medical education and professional collaboration to ensure that clinicians remain updated with emerging evidence and advances in the management of diabetes and its cardiovascular and renal complications.

The session reflected SIMON Far West Chapter’s ongoing commitment to promoting evidence-based medicine, continuing professional education and professional fellowship among healthcare practitioners in the Far Western region.
